Will a tall bookshelf overwhelm my room?

A tall bookshelf overwhelms a room when it is too wide for the wall it sits on, when it cuts off the ceiling in a low-ceilinged space, or when its color and visual weight are too heavy relative to the other furniture. In a room with high ceilings, the same shelf often anchors the wall rather than overwhelming it.

Width is usually more of a problem than height. A shelf that spans most of a wall reads as a built-in architectural feature and tends to look intentional. A shelf that takes up a third of the wall with empty space on both sides reads as furniture that is too large for its placement. The relationship between the shelf width and the wall width determines whether it reads as a statement or an oversized object.

The shelf finish also changes how it reads. A shelf painted the same color as the wall recedes and reads lighter than one in a contrasting finish. A shelf filled with dark spines and heavy objects reads heavier than one with lighter objects and some open space. These are visual variables that product photos never capture accurately.

DecorViz lets you preview a bookshelf against your wall so you can judge its presence in your actual room before you buy. Try it free on your own photo.
